Í ræðu á Akureyri 8. september sagði Halldór Ásgrímsson: „State subsidies in the European Union have encouraged investments that will not and cannot pay off. The result of state subsidies is an inefficient fishing industry.

The fishing fleet in the European Union is too large and too expensive. State subsidies have aggravated the situation and damaged natural competition. State subsidies that encourage investment should be abolished."
